Freeport, Grand Bahama - Happy Helpers a concierge service company that was established in 2010 by co-owners Rachel Smith and Carla Hanna-Wilson held an Independence beach clean on July 11th at Port of Call Beach, Freeport, Grand Bahama.

"We were very pleased with the turnout for the beach clean up, we had twenty persons that came out and supported," said Rachael Smith. "I always wanted to do a beach clean up growing up. I was actually one of those persons that complained bout the amount of trash that was always on the beach. I thought to myself instead of complaining, I should make a difference!"

Smith contacted the Port Authority and told them about their upcoming plans and they were very pleased and assisted. "They provided us with gloves and the garbage bags for the beach clean," said Smith.

Smith said that one of the main reasons she was prompted to do the cleanup was the fact that she actually witnessed someone dumping and she said it was heart breaking that tourists witnessed it too. "I was very upset to see the amount of trash, appliances, conch shells and furniture on the beach is terrible, but to see someone in the act was so disappointing. I couldn’t allow visitors to have to experience this and return home with the complaint of the way we treat our beaches," she said.

During the clean up they split up into groups and were able to collect 14 large gallon bags of trash in just one area. In one area they discovered over 40 burned bottles, and in another area, 20 or more conch shells.

Two people who were unaware of the clean up joined in  and they ended the beach clean with a small social bbq. "It was good to get together and discuss the importance of keeping our beaches clean and making a difference in the community," said Smith. "We also tied a few garbage bags to some trees in the areas we realized people dump trash as an encouraging way to use it instead of throwing it on the ground."

The two entrepreneurs with to send a message of encouragement to the public to please work together in preserving our natural beauty. "If you are heading to the beach for a picnic, beach party or any type of beach event, please be reminded to take a garbage bag or plastic bag with you. It’s good to also encourage our children to do the same so that they can grow up to remember to do the same thing and for more generations to come."

Happy Helpers expressed their thanks to the Port Authority and Sanitation Services for assisting them, and they plans are in the works for a year-end beach clean.
