St. Georges’ High graduate receives academic scholarship from Grand Bahama FIDA chapter

Freeport, Grand Bahama - The Grand Bahama Chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) is pleased to announce the award of an academic scholarship to its eighth recipient, Miss Teonya Takahra Knowles. Miss Knowles is a graduate of St. Georges’ High School and was successful in obtaining seven (7) BGCSE’s passes at grade ‘C’ and above.

The FIDA Scholarship is an award of Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000.00) each year for two (2) years of study at The College of The Bahamas. Miss Knowles will be pursuing an Associates of Arts Degree in Law and Criminal Justice. Her ultimate goal is to enter the field of Law.

Since 2006 FIDA has awarded eight (8) scholarships. The recipients were Patrick Lamar Russell for Electrical Engineering; Kishmere Rolle for the field of Pharmacology; Destiny McKinney for Law; Pedro Neely for Biology with a minor in Chemistry; Abigail Wallace for Biology with a minor in Chemistry; Jessica Bain for Physics with a minor in Mathematics; and Angelique Smith for Biology with a minor in Chemistry. .

The award is available for Bahamian citizens and Grand Bahama residents who are recent graduates from a High School on Grand Bahama Island. They must have at least 5 BGCSE’s at Grade ‘C’ or above, including Mathematics and English; and a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 from High School.

In 2009 FIDA introduced a book grant in the amount of five hundred ($500.00) dollars for a student or students attending the College of The Bahamas in recognition of their outstanding academic achievement. One grant is given in memory of our FIDA sister Nekcarla Grant who sadly passed away at the very young age of 36. This year FIDA is proud to announce the award of three (3) book grants to deserving recipients. They are Tamarind Johnson a graduate of St. Georges’ High School and presently enrolled in COB’s Oakes Field Campus, Miss Tominitra King a graduate of Grand Bahama Catholic High School who is pursuing a degree in Banking and Finance (recipient of the Nekcarla Grant Book Grant) and Miss Shavanya Roberts who is also a graduate of Grand Bahama Catholic High School and is pursuing an Associates Degree in Law and Criminal Justice.

The FIDA Scholarship Committee is comprised of a representative from The College of The Bahamas, Dr. Coralee Kelly; Petra Hanna-Weekes, FIDA member and Partner in the law firm of Graham, Thompson & Co.; Aisha Stuart-Smith, FIDA Vice President and Associate in the law firm of Graham, Thompson & Co.; Jethlyn Burrows, FIDA Regional Vice President for North America and the Caribbean and Partner in the law firm of Meridian Law Chambers; and Charisse Brown, Senior Legal Counsel of The Grand Bahama Development Company Limited and Chairman of the Committee.

FIDA wishes to recognize and thank the legal fraternity in Grand Bahama for their continued support of the scholarship fund over the years.

FIDA is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Organized in Mexico City in 1944, to promote the principles and aims of the United Nations in their legal and social aspects, FIDA works to establish friendly international relations on a basis of mutual respect and equality and to promote the welfare of women and children.

Members and Affiliates from 80 countries meet every second year in the country of the current president, in rotation among five areas of the world. A compendium of articles on legal and humanistic topics is issued biennially.

Individual membership is open to male and female law graduates admitted to practice in their respective countries or eligible or eligible to be admitted. Academics and law students also are invited to membership. Apolitical, non-profit, independent organizations of women lawyers may affiliate with FIDA as voting members. Men and women non-lawyers interested in the advancement of women in the legal profession may participate in FIDA as patrons. FIDA New Providence was re-established as a chapter in March 2014.
