Freeport, Bahamas – Beginning Saturday February 13th, scores of youngsters from the island’s eastern end will participate in biweekly tennis clinics on newly refurbished courts at the Sir Charles Hayward Yacht Club.

Organized by the Munroe Tennis Academy, along with Hon A. Kenneth Russell, Minister of Housing and MP for High Rock, primary school students from all of the island’s eastern primary schools will be exposed to the sport of tennis, every two Saturdays, at the club’s facilities.

Free usage of the club’s tennis facilities is only one of several youth programs planned by the Grand Bahama Sailing Club who call the Yacht Club home.  According to Sailing Club president, Mr. Chris Paine, the whole idea behind having the courts revamped last year was to add to the club’s amenities for the benefit of the wider community.

“The Yacht Club is named in honor of Sir Jack Hayward’s father (Sir Charles Hayward). Their generosity towards the island and philanthropic contributions are well known.  The tennis clinic provides a great opportunity for young people to learn a new sport and Sir Jack certainly endorses the idea, especially since it’s for the good of our youth,” expressed Paine.

Leading the clinic will be Patrick Munroe, father of Bahamian tennis star, LaVaughn Munroe who died in a traffic accident early last year.

“The debut of this clinic for the youth of East End is a realization of LaVaughn’s dreams.  As the anniversary of his death looms, we feel it most appropriate for the Munroe Tennis Academy to officially launch this tennis clinic for the often overlooked children of East End,” said Munroe.

Munroe expressed gratitude to the Yacht Club. “This is definitely a joint venture between all of the parties concerned and it would not have happened without each being involved,” he added.

The clinic begins at 10am on Saturday with official opening ceremonies followed by training sessions until Noon.  Local coaches Roscoe Dickerson and Ryan Wong will assist Munroe in developing not only skills, but a love for the game.

In addition to supporting tennis clinics, the Sailing Club will soon host an after-school sailing program at the Yacht Club, for kids, age 7 – 9 years old.  According to Chris Paine, through the program, kids will be exposed to the fundamentals of sailing in a classroom setting initially and then move outdoors, learning rigging and how to actually sail.

“It’s really a good mix to introduce tennis and sailing so that we can expose a greater number of kids to these sports,” said Paine.  Additionally, he invites the public at large to consider membership at the Yacht Club.  “We have a great family atmosphere there, with the pool, tennis courts, sailing, shuffleboard and Sunday dining,” he added.
