Nassau, Bahamas - History has repeated itself as the Mary Star Stingrays have shone brightly in the nation’s capital. This is the third time in five years the Mighty Stingrays have won the Catholic Archdiocesan Spelling Bee. The victory was made even sweeter with the runner up also hailing from Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic School.
The school’s Spelling Bee Team: Ajhonae Wildgoose, Tonae Farquharson, Xavier Robinson Pateva Curtis along with their coach Mrs. Natalie Marrett and Principal, Mr. Robert Nabb travelled into New Providence this past Friday to participate in the Annual Archdiocesan Spelling Bee. The whole team was on the edge because they were going in as the defending champions. Gabrielle Edwards brought the gold home to Grand Bahama last year. They were reassured by their coach and principal that all that was required of them was to do their best. These students began their trek in September 2011 and worked right up until the final day of the final week. They had even studied with their second coach, Mrs. Shimoon Cambridge every day over the Christmas holidays.

The Catholic Archdiocesan Spelling Bee takes place every January in Nassau. New Providence Every Catholic school in New Providence, Grand Bahama and Abaco sends three students to compete for the coveted title. The competition is always fierce as the students battle it out over a day in the venerable Seton Hall at Xavier’s College, Nassau. During the last few rounds of this competition, the two MSS spellers competed with each other for the final reward.
The school was on pins and needles the entire day as they awaited news from the spellers. Pandemonium broke out in the school as shortly after the dismissal bell the school’s vice principal made the announcement on the P.A. that Ajhonae Wildgoose and Tonae Farquharson placed first and second respectively in the Spelling Bee. This accomplishment brought déjà vu as Conor Low and Makarios Rolle of MSS also won first and second in the Archdiocesan Spelling Bee five years ago.
The MSS Stingray family is proud of the entire Spelling Bee team especially Ajhonae Wildgoose and Tonae Farquharson who will now represent the school in the National Spelling Bee to be held in New Providence and also represent the Bahamas in the Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee in Orlando, Florida.
