Freeport, Grand Bahama - “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven” – Ecclesiastes 3:1. We here at Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic School use this approach to develop holistic individuals. There is a time for academics and a time for faith sharing; there is a time for having fun and a time for giving service. During the Catholic Schools Week/Spirit Week our students were exposed to all the aspects of our theme: Faith, Academics and Service.

One of the main facets was that of service. From the Early Childhood Department through the sixth grade; the entire student body was involved in two key service projects. The first was a food drive for the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a Catholic organization which offers tangible assistance to those in need on a person-to-person basis. Our students came out in full force to assist with canned goods to help persons in our community who have fallen on hard times.

The other service project was a monetary donation to the Grand Bahama Kidney Center. Families of Mary Star dug deep into their pockets to contribute to this worthy cause. The Center is a staple on our island helping individuals in our community who cope with kidney disorders. Our very own student Sherrad Russell along with Mr. Nabb, the principal, presented the cheque to Nurse Sherise Dawkins R.N. from the center. Sherrad is no stranger to the Kidney center, he has benefited from the facility and finds great pleasure in giving back to it.

The sixth graders wanted to do more service than the above mentioned ones. They donned gloves and work clothes and a-cleaning they went. They cleaned the Marian Shrine on West Sunrise Highway, the Catholic Retreat Center on Tamarind Street and Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. The 6th graders also volunteered at The Bahamas Red Cross Headquarters, GB Humane Society, The Rand Nature Centre and The Freeport Veterinary Clinic.
Faith, Academics and Service with this combination Mary Star Stingrays are truly holistic.
