Freeport, Grand Bahama – The most recent and youngest team members of the ‘Keep Grand Bahama Clean’ (KGBC) initiative were hard at work all year spreading the message of environmental stewardship. Lisa, a 22 year old environmental inspector, Chris, an 11 year old student and the youngest member Candice aged 9, are all puppets. This team of three performs a witty, fast paced, humorous skit teaching children in the classrooms from east to west Grand Bahama Island valuable environmental lessons.

Nakira Wilchombe, Environmental Manager for The Grand Bahama Port Authority and Chairperson for the KGBC committee, reveals the skit’s message. “Led by Lisa, Chris and Candice are told why it’s very important that they get involved in ‘Keeping Grand Bahama Clean’. Even when on breaks from school, it is their responsibility to do their part in forming community groups and discontinuing the practice of throwing garbage from their Dad's car window,” shares Wilchcombe. “They are also told about the health dangers associated with a dirty environment.” The students share in the lessons that Chris and Candice have learnt. By the end of the show, the audience is invited to pledge, along with Chris and Candice, to do their part in ‘Keeping Grand Bahama Clean’.”

The puppet show is one of several teaching tools and public awareness efforts developed by the KGBC team. Other educational efforts include: Public Service Announcements, environmental minutes displayed monthly in The Freeport News, power point presentations at town meetings and skits.

The message of the KGBC puppet show has already been heard by many students on the island. Freetown Primary, Sweetings Cay, McCleans Town, High Rock Primary, St. Paul's Methodist College Primary School, Kindercare Learning Center, West End Primary, Walter Parker, Freeport Primary, First Baptist Academy, Tabernacle Primary, Bahamas National Trust Summer Camp, Salvation Army Summer Camp, Pineridge Urban Renewal Summer Camp, West End Urban Renewal Summer Camp, Freeport Gospel Primary and others have all been exposed to the puppet trio.

Through this puppet show, the KGBC team has realized that if you educate the younger people, commitment to a cleaner environment becomes a lifestyle, whereas with adults, they have to remember or be reminded. Teachers and others who would like to schedule puppet shows or obtain educational materials about ‘Keeping Grand Bahama Clean’ can do so by contacting Mrs. Nakira Wilchcombe, KGBC Chairperson at 350.9164.
