Freeport, Grand Bahama - Summer just got a whole lot sweeter for the youngsters of Sir Charles Hayward Children’s Library camp thanks to a $7000 donation from fast-growing environmental advocacy group Save The Bays.

The annual Grand Bahama camp offers traditional Bahamian activities such as boat building, straw craft, crochet and sewing in an effort to cultivate an appreciation for the history and culture of the islands at an early age.

“Save The Bays is very pleased to support this youth summer program as we all know the environment belongs to the future of this country, which lies in the hands of our children,” said prominent attorney Fred Smith, QC, one of the group’s directors.

This year’s theme is “All About Skills” and the 5-15 year olds in attendance will be guided through a new topic each week, including a reading challenge using e-readers.

Interactive sessions on fire safety and bullying will be offered, along with a “Know Your Island” segment that takes campers to historic Bahamian sites like the Ben’s Cave and Cooper’s Castle.

“Save The Bays Coalition’s support could not have come at a better time. Our children will have the chance to learn about the organization’s invaluable efforts in protecting the environment and be exposed to the wonders of true Bahamian culture in one go,” said Sir Charles Hayward Library’s executive director Geneva Rutherford.

World-famous performing artist, Kirkland “K.B.” Bodie, also a Save The Bays director, has pledged to attend as many sessions as possible, as he is excited about inspiring the next generation of environmental warriors through the program.

Save The Bays, launched only a year ago, is taking The Bahamas by storm. The group is advocating an end to the social and environmental damage caused by unregulated development, and has already attracted more than 500 members, 14,000 likes on Facebook and 6,000 signatures on its petition calling for an Environmental Protection Act and a Freedom of Information Act.

To enroll in the camp, call the school at 352-7048 or 352-3524. Visit www.savethebays.bs to sign the group’s the petition.
