Freeport, Grand Bahama- As six Grand Bahama Power Company (GBPC) employees returned from the Southern Bahamas on November 13th an additional four boarded a charter flight to replace their efforts to restore power to residents in the wake of the powerful Hurricane Joaquin that devastated the region in October.

The second crew of GBPC employees consisting of Wayne Gray, Gilbert Pinder, Keith Knowles, and Leslie Romer along with two bucket trucks and a drill rig were dispatched to Long Island on November 13th for a two week period. While there, the crew will work six days a week to maximize their time and resources to assist in restoration efforts.

The devastating storm, that hammered the Southern Bahamas with hurricane-force winds, storm surge flooding and torrential rain in October, has left most of the southern Bahamas affected by the loss of power. The initial six member crew of GBPCs Transmission and Distribution departed for Nassau on October 11th and were redeployed to Long Island by the Bahamas Electricity Corporation for a three week period where they worked 12 - 14 hours per day, 6 days per week.

“The residents were so appreciative of our help, their hospitality even in a time of distress is admirable, having witnessed first-hand the devastation, I am happy that I was able to help with restoration while there.” Arthur Spencer, linemen GBPC stated upon his return.

This initiative is in keeping with the Company’s corporate philosophy, and compassion for residents impacted by the storm. The crew consists of overhead linemen who specialize in the construction, maintenance and repair of transmission and distribution assets. GBPC commends the members of its Crew, whom graciously accepted this assignment.

“Providing support to our neighbours in this or any major natural disasters is one of the hallmarks of GBPC and Emera our parent company” said Troy Mackenzie, Director of Transmission and distribution. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the people affected by Joaquin in the Southern Bahamas; we will make every effort to aid in the restoration of power as quickly as possible.”
