Freeport, Grand Bahama – Last weekend was an exciting one for the Grand Bahama Shipyard (GBS) as they hosted the Prime Minister to a tour of the facilities. The Company also celebrated its 10th Apprentice Graduation ceremony.

The Right Honourable Perry Christie toured all aspects of the Shipyard’s operation. This was Christie’s first time at the facility and during a breakfast presentation Carl Rotkirch, Shipyard CEO, gave the Prime Minster an overview of the history and progress to date of the facility. The Prime Minister also had an opportunity to address the three hundred permanent Bahamian staff currently employed at the Shipyard. While meeting the staff, the Prime Minister shared his opinion that the Shipyard has had a great positive impact on Grand Bahama, especially when it comes to training young Bahamians in the ship repair industry.

“This visit has not only allowed us to examine what the GB Shipyard is doing but also to let the GB Shipyard hear the expectations of the government. We must continue to ensure that our educational system is tailored to the needs of the industries here in GB. This is the industrial capital of the Bahamas and therefore we must pay a lot of attention to technical areas of education,” said Christie.

Minister of Labour, Shane Gibson, Minister of Transport and Aviation, Glenys Hanna Martin, Minister of Tourism, Obie Wilchcombe, Minister for Grand Bahama, Michael Darville and State Minister for Investment Khaalis Rolle accompanied the Prime Minister during his visit to the yard.

After the special visit from the dignitaries, the Shipyard hosted their 10th Apprentice Graduation and Award Ceremony. Five apprentices graduated from the programme this year: Rashad Pinder, Tevin Cartwright, Vincent Charlton, Theo Pelecanos and Antonesia Moxey. The apprenticeship programme was lauded by the Prime Minister.

Minister for Grand Bahama, Michael Darville was the keynote speaker at the graduation, and noted that it’s important that the Shipyard continues to train Bahamians for these highly specialised jobs. He thanked the Shipyard for the role it plays in training and hiring Bahamians and shared his hopes that the Shipyard will continue to play a huge role in keeping Bahamians employed.

Both CEO Carl Rotkirch and COO Reuben Byrd addressed the graduates at the graduation and award ceremony. Attending the ceremony were families and friends of the graduates, officers from the Ministry of Education and representatives from the corporate community. “Since its inception in the year 2000, the impact of the Shipyard on the community of Grand Bahama has increased steadily,” said Carl Rotkirch, CEO of GBS.

“We employ, directly and indirectly, more than 2,600 people on the island. We intend to continue to grow, and with this growth comes an increased number of people who in one way or another will gain from our activities. The apprenticeship programme that we have developed together with BTVI has now reached an important milestone as we are now celebrating our 10th apprentice graduation, and we hope to continue to contribute significantly to training young Bahamians.”
