Freeport, Grand Bahama – On March 9, 2019, the local chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority will unite with its members globally, to simultaneously host the annual Youth Symposium. The Symposium is just one initiative of the sorority’s national signature program, Project Reassurance, which has incorporated the theme of “H3: It’s All About Me – Healthy Choices, Healthy Living, Healthy Generations. The sorority received a signed proclamation by the Most Honorable Prime Minister, Dr Hubert Minnis, declaring March 9, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Youth Day, on the island of Grand Bahama.

The 2019 Youth Symposium theme is “Mission Possible: A Safe Space for Our Youth”. Vice President and Project Chair, Philcher Grant said, “We live in a time in which protecting our youth is imperative to survival. Equipping the youth with the skills and competencies to not only advocate for themselves but also their peers is important. For parents and guardians, it is important to know and understand what affects the youth, and to be able to support and advocate on their behalf is also important.”

She also added, “The goal of the symposium is to create dialogue, have opportunities for youth to connect to community resources, and to provide inspiration for making positive and long-last change.”

The Youth Symposium program is targeted at the age group 12 to 18 but is open to the general public. There will be prizes, giveaways and surprises as the event promises to be impactful and fun filled. Refreshments will also be served.

On the agenda for the Youth Symposium are high powered speakers, Senator Katherine Forbes-Smith, Founder of GirlCon; Tarantee Laing, Founder of Cardio Blast Experience; Kimberley Russell; Grand Bahama Co-Operative Credit Union, and Karen Barr of Raising the Bar Fitness.

Ms Grant also expressed the sorority’s gratitude to its corporate partners Equinor, Aliv, Galleria Cinemas and Grand Bahama Power Company. The event will be hosted at the Jack Hayward Auditorium between the hours of 10am to 1pm on March 9, 2019.
