The Grand Bahama Tennis and Squash Club introducing Grand Bahama youth to the sports of squash and tennis.
|
The Grand Bahama Tennis and
Squash Club has always been involved in introducing the youth of Grand Bahama
to the sports of squash and tennis by way of holding junior skills programmes
at the Club. During the months of February and March, more than 25 young
players participated in a seven week introductory course. The clinic was dedicated
to the memory of past president Errol Bodie who committed much of his life to
promoting youngsters in sports.
The free programme was open to children and teens between the ages
of 8 and 17 years old with the aim of introducing them to squash, a sport that
is not often talked about in Grand Bahama. The participants took part in weekly,
two-hour sessions that consisted of strength and fitness training as well as
basic ball and racket skills required to play. The rules and regulations for
playing a game of squash were also studied.
The sessions were fun, non-stop action and encouraged all the
young players to test their skill and competitiveness against one another.
Current club members volunteered to coach and mentor the youngsters. For the
grand finale, there was a mini tournament and skills competition along with the
presentation of certificates, awards and T Shirts.
The Grand Bahama Tennis and Squash Club has been in existence for
over 40 years and has coached many young players to an international level. It
has also supported and assisted several to obtain scholarships to study in the
USA and Canada. By offering training programmes, the Club hopes to widen the
knowledge and awareness of the sport of squash within the local community and
by doing this more young players will see the fitness benefits it can offer.
The Club also offers free introductory adult coaching sessions
once a month. For coaching details and further information on joining the
family-orientated Grand Bahama Tennis and Squash Club, which is located off
Beachway Drive (behind Bishop Michael Eldon School and the stables) please call
