West End, Grand Bahama Island - The Ginn West End
Foundation presented a sponsorship cheque to The West End Eco-Fishing
Camp Association, who along with the West End Police, Urban Renewal and
team of volunteers, for the third consecutive year, will host a 12 week
program from 9th April - 25th June in West End. The dedicated team
ensures the children's safety and training, while providing
encouragement and support to each camper.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force, Urban Renewal and local
churches are part of the selection process whereby deserving candidates
are identified, from a registration list of children aged 8 to 15 years
old, to attend the Camp, free of charge.
The Foundation is pleased to support this worthwhile programme and
endorses the camp's motto "Esprit de Corps", which encourages a 'team
effort' with a balanced dose of "discipline" in each of its planned
activities. Last year over 60 students were taught how to swim, fish,
boatmanship, were educated in the field of ecology, participated in
community clean up exercises and were taught to develop an
entrepreneurial spirit where they can shape their future and that of
their community.
Last year, in addition to sponsoring The
West End Eco-Fishing Camp, The Ginn West End Foundation sponsored 24
campers to a two-week sailing training session organized by The Grand
Bahama Sailing Club located at the Sir Charles Hayward Yacht Club. The
students learnt the fundamentals of sailing and received hands-on
training, exposing them to the joy of sailing. The West End Eco-Fishing
Camp is currently in the process of purchasing used Lasik's and Opti's
from the Sailing Club, in hope of hosting a 2011 Regatta, to be held in
West End under the auspices of the WEEFCA and to be planned by the
campers!
Nakira Wilchcombe of The Grand Bahama Port Authority
will once again impart information on Grand Bahama's eco-system, an
integral part of the camp. A visit to the Rand Nature Centre along
with training sessions led by Clayton Curtis of Sea Scout, Marie
Cadets, Wellington Ferguson [Nature and Bahamian Historian], Gregg
Waugh of Safe Spear [lionfish] and the Bahamas National Trust, round
out the list of additional instruction incorporated in the 2011
Eco-Fishing Camp.
Mrs. Linda Barry-Cooper, Chairman of The West End Eco-Fishing Camp
Association along with her Assistant, Miss Kenda Christie of the West
End Urban Renewal expressed their appreciation to The Ginn West End
Foundation for once again supporting the camp. Mr. Derek Gape, Project
Manager of Ginn sur Mer presented the donation and thanked all those
involved, including the West End Police Department, Urban Renewal and
volunteers from the West End community for generously giving their time
and talents and stepping forward in order to make this dream come true
for many of the deserving youth from the West End community.
