Freeport, The Bahamas - Hon. Dr. Michael Darville, M.P., Minister For Grand Bahama on the passing of Mrs. Sandra Arlene Edgecombe, Deputy Director Of Education For Grand Bahama Island, Bimini & Grand Cay, The Bahamas Ministry Of Education, Science & Technology:

Today is indeed a sad day in The Bahamas and particularly on the island of Grand Bahama, as we mourn the sudden loss of veteran educator, Mrs. Sandra Arlene Edgecombe. As most Bahamians residing in the Northern Bahamas are aware, Mrs. Edgecombe was employed at The Bahamas Ministry of Education, Science & Technology in the capacity of Deputy Director of Education for Grand Bahama Island, Bimini & Grand Cay.

Mrs. Edgecombe’s career in Education began in 1978 at the Eight Mile Rock High School, where she climbed through the ranks and was eventually promoted to Principal of that school, before her departure in 2005. During that time she not only affected the lives of her students, but brought about positive changes within the Eight Mile Rock community. She was instrumental in implementing various programs in the areas of Academics, Sports and Culture. Her programs of change resulted in a school which gained respect and admiration from many citizens on Grand Bahama. As a result of her efforts at the Eight Mile Rock High School, I am told that she earned the title of “mother bluejay”.

Since leaving the Eight Mile Rock High School, Mrs. Edgecombe’s career blossomed, affording her the opportunities to serve as Superintendent for Eastern Grand Bahama & Grand Cay and Deputy Director for Grand Bahama, Grand Cay; Bimini, where she worked diligently until her untimely death.

It is my understanding that Mrs. Edgecombe’s philosophy was “to teach is to touch a life forever”, which has been the driving force behind her goals and success over the years. Mrs. Edgecombe often publicly credited her success in Education to God, whom I am confident; she has passed on, to be with.

Today, I stand with my colleague, the Minister of Education, Science & Technology, the Honourable Jerome Fitzgerald, to extend condolences to Mrs. Edgecombe’s husband and son, her extended family in the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology, and the many others, whose lives, she would have impacted in one way or another.

Mrs. Edgecombe was truly a beacon and an educational icon in the Grand Bahamian community and will be sadly missed by many. May her soul and the souls of the dearly departed, rest in peace!
