Rick Lowe: Government should follow the rules with law making

Here we go again.

Four new Bills have been tabled in Parliament yet again and the government has not followed the proper procedure as laid down by the Westminster System of Government and agreed by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

They include:

Financial Transactions Reporting Bill, 2017 - 46 pages
Integrity Commission Bill, 2017 - 110 pages
Proceeds of Crime Bill, 2017 - 87 pages
Travellers Currency (Amendment) Bill, 2017 - 7 pages

Whatever happened to the preparation of a Green Paper for consultation then issuing a White Paper followed by the Bill for Parliamentary debate?

Once again Civil Society is expected to scramble and submit comments for consideration after the fact.

When in Opposition political parties believe in consultation and promise to be different should they become the government. Once elected though they are not quite so magnanimous and just can't seem to find the will to follow the agreed rules of law making.

The rule of law is an important tenet of our Parliamentary Democracy that has been ignored when passing legislation for decades.

Try disrespecting a Parliamentarian in similar fashion.

Yours in liberty,
Rick Lowe
