Retraction and Apology

On October 11th The Bahamas Weekly published a brief update after Hurricane Matthew with an inaccurate title which implied Pelican Bay Hotel was closed.  We regret and apologize for any inconvenience caused to the hotel and our readers.

On October 12th the hotel issued the following press statement:

Pelican Bay Open for Business!

Freeport, GB, Bahamas – The Bahamian flag is flying high over Pelican Bay; Canal House roof is secure and safe. Despite the ravages of Hurricane Mathew the 184 room boutique hotel has continued to stay open and is in operation.

Though the hotel has limited services, operating on generator for now, room reservations are being accepted for personnel involved in restoring and maintaining essential services on Grand Bahama. “It is imperative that we get our island up and running,” said Magnus Alnebeck, General Manager of the Property.  “My staff has been exceptional in keeping our doors open, guests as happy as they can be and we opened our signature restaurant Sabor two nights ago.”

“Our roof damage has been secured and ‘made safe’ thanks to the quick work of local contractor Freeport Construction. We were able to host the Government Delegation twice this week, which included our Prime Minister, and our usual renters held their weekly Sunday church service here too.”

In addition to Pelican Bay being open well-known Chef Emmanuel and his team worked tirelessly to start serving lunch and dinner daily and the newly opened Bones Bar is open for Happy Hour from 5-7pm.

“We are very pleased to be able to provide space for many of the companies that are involved in maintaining and restoring essential services,” said Alnebeck. “It is our hope we will be able to take booked guests and returning residents shortly but we will advise via our Facebook page when this can happen. We just want to get our Great Grand Bahama up and going.”
