Actor, author, activist and humanitarian Ashley Judd to speak at 3rd World Conference of Women's Shelters

The Hague - Actress, humanitarian, and PSI Global Ambassador Ashley Judd is one of the keynote speakers at the 3rd World Conference of Women's Shelters in the Hague, the Netherlands. At the conference health care workers and prominent speakers like Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark and Dr. Mukwege join forces to tackle one of the biggest ongoing crimes against humanity of all times: violence against women. Ashley Judd, who will speak at the closing day of the Conference, will share her personal studies and discuss how they reflect the themes of the conference.
As she visited slums, brothels and schools in Madagascar, Democratic Republic of Congo, Thailand, Cambodia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Kenya, Nicaragua, Rwanda and South Africa to meet with survivors, Judd knows from experience what the 3rd World Conference of Women's Shelters is all about.
"Violence against girls and women has grave consequences for the survivor. There is also a cascade effect into her neighborhood, her town, and her country," Judd says. "If we can provide safe places to care for and support survivors of gender-based violence, we offer them a crucial portal to dignity, while creating healthier outcomes for entire populations."
During her speech at the conference, too, Judd will explain how the negative effects of gender-based violence spread far beyond female survivors. Furthermore, she addresses topics such as technology and violence against women, and gender based violence as a health issue. These are discussed on prior days at the conference also, making Judd a perfect candidate to talk during the closing session 'Time to Act,’ along with Bandana Rana (chair of the Global Network of Women’s Shelters), a representative of UN Women and the Dutch Deputy Minister of Health.
Famous for films such as ‘Divergent,’ ‘Dolphin Tale,’ ‘Double Jeopardy,’ and ‘Heat,’ Judd has been engaging in global feminist social justice work in earnest since 2002. Now, she continues to take a stand in helping women around the world to have happier and healthier lives.
