AMIGO, the ‘inspiration’ for the Potcake Series which marks a ‘first’ in the annals of Bahamian Commeratiive Stamps, and which is already causing much anticipation and excitement, appears on the cover of the current issue of Abaco Life Magazine. The artist, Mr. Lowe, is already inundated with requests for ‘first day covers’, which will be unveiled at the annual ‘Roots Festival’ which will take place in Abaco, the first week of May.
It is hoped that this beautiful Commemorative Issue, collected worldwide by stamp lovers, will be used in aid of helping our precious Bahamian Potcakes many of whom are homeless, carelessly and cruelly treated and unappreciated as the “National Treasure” they indeed are. The artist, a potcake and animal lover himself plans to be very involved in those efforts. Limited edition prints of the painting, signed and donated by Lowe, as well as poster sized prints of the beautiful stamps will be sold, to benefit AMIGO’S FUND, which will benefit both the Bahamas Humane Society in Nassau, and the Humane Society of Grand Bahama, of which AMIGO was originally ‘poster dog’ putting issues like the importance of Spay/Neuter ‘on the map’ and starring in the HSGB ‘Crusade Against Animal Suffering on GBI as well as their National Awareness Campaign on the care and treatment of animals and becoming the ‘face’ of the need for animal protection throughout the Bahamas.
AMIGO’S ‘human,’ Frances Singer- Hayward expressed her honor and joy at this “incredibly beautiful accolade…” describing it as “a most fitting tribute to this gallant little potcake who, in his own sweet way, was able to make a difference…”
Alton Lowe’s works are collected around the world, including three that are owned by The Royal Family (one of which was the official gift from the Government of The Bahamas on the occasion of the marriage of Prince Charles to Princess Diana.) He has designed over one hundred and fifty stamps with subjects ranging from Bahamian scenes to his incredibly beautiful renderings of flora and fauna. This, however, is the first time The Potcake has been the subject of an Issue.
The history of the Potcake goes back to Colonial times when they first arrived on our shores as the companion animals of the settlers and founders of our country who, as loyalists to the Crown, made their journey from the Carolinas to start a new life. The four Commemorative Stamps pay tribute and honor this noble breed, giving them the respect and place in Bahamian history they so richly deserve
