Minister of the Environment and Housing, Hon. Kenred Dorsett, is presently in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates attending the 11th Council Meetings of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). IRENA is “an intergovernmental organization that supports countries in their transition to sustainable energy future, and serves as the principal platform for international cooperation, a centre of excellence,and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy.” There are 147 member countries of IRENA. The Bahamas joined IRENA in 2014 to assist in the deployment of renewable energy sources in the country. Today, at the 11 th Meeting of the Council, Minister Dorsett, was appointed as Chairman of the IRENA's Council. The Council is comprised of 21 member countries who are elected in rotation. The Council ensures the equatable distribution of its work, the participation of developing and developed countries and reviews the draft budget and annual report among other things. The Ministry congratulates the Minister on his appointment and looks forward to supporting him in his efforts as Chairman of the Council for the coming year.
