WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Bahamas was well represented in the 39th annual U.S. Marine Corps marathon held in the Washington, D.C., area on Sunday, October 26, 2014.

About 30,000 runners started the race in Arlington, Virginia, and ended the 26.2-mile run at the Marine Corps War Memorial near Rosslyn, Virginia. The course of the marathon, one of the largest marathons in the United State, covers the National Mall between the historic Lincoln Memorial and U.S. Capitol, passing many iconic landmarks, including the Washington Monument and the Smithsonians. Race organizers said runners represented 59 countries and each branch of the U.S. armed forces.

Among the participants were 16 members of the Bahamas Roadmasters Running Club, including Club President Charles Johnson, Ursula Pratt, Darian Creary, Michael Cunningham, Anthony Longley, Leah Major, Carl Blades, Shavaughn Blades, James Bodie, Yolanda Deveaux, Michelle Gibson, Caroline Longley, Natasha Major, Neutalya McDonald, and Linda Williams.

On Monday, several of the runners paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Dr. Eugene Newry, Bahamas Ambassador to the United States, at the Bahamas Embassy, 2220 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W. Joining the Ambassador in the Embassy conference room to welcome the Bahamians to the Embassy were Mr. Chet Neymour, Deputy Chief of Mission; Miss Krissy Hanna, Second Secretary; and Mr. Mikhail Bullard, Third Secretary.

Earlier they had paid a courtesy call on Mrs. Paulette Zonicle, Bahamas Consul General to Washington, D.C., at the Embassy’s consular annex, 1025 Vermont Avenue, N.W.

“Long distance running is a popular and growing sport and people travel the world to participate in races like the 10K, half and full marathons,” said Club President Johnson, adding that there are two major long-distance races in The Bahamas – the Roadmasters Bahamas Half (13.1 miles), which is scheduled for November 23, 2014, and Marathon Bahamas (26.2 miles) scheduled for January 11, 2015.

“Such events are major economic boosts for the national economy,” Mr. Johnson said.

Club member Anthony Longley noted that Roadmasters Running Club was founded in 1990 by a group of running enthusiasts with the aim of promoting the sport of distance running in The Bahamas, and club members have travelled throughout North America as well as to London, England, and Tokyo, Japan, to participate in marathons.

“The club is growing rapidly and currently has about 60 members, males and females,” Mr. Longley said.
