Bahamas attends 105th Session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva

SWITZERLAND -- Members of the Bahamian delegation attending the 105th Session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland participated in the general assembly during the morning session on June 7th. Under the theme 'Building a Future with Decent Work,' Social Partners from The Bahamas which includes Government Officials, Representatives from the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation, National Congress of Trade Unions Bahamas and Commonwealth of the Bahamas Trade Union Congress attended a series of Committee Meetings and Multi-National Forums regarding Decent Work in Global Supply Chains, Decent Work for Peace, Security and Disaster Resilience, and the impact of the ILO on Social Justice for Fair Globalization.

On Wednesday June 8th delegates are expected to cast votes on the amendments to the Code of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 and the adoption of amendments to the annexes of the Seafarers Identity Documents Convention 2003. Also on Wednesday the ILO will celebrate World Day Against Child Labour with special discussion under the theme End Child Labour in Supply Chains.

On Thursday delegates will attend and participate in the World of Work Summit. This special session will be addressed by His Excellency Jean-Claude Juniper, President of the European Commission on the topic Decent Work for Youth.

The Hon. D. Shane Gibson, Minister of Labour and National Insurance and Minister for the Public Service addresses the 105th Session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva Switzerland on June 7th. Delegates from 187 countries heard Minister Gibson report on the Bahamian participation in matters related to the International Labour Organization and the efforts that the Government of the Bahamas had made in improving the World of Work for the Bahamian Labour Market.

Minister Gibson thanked Guy Ryder/Director General of the ILO for the recent appointment of Claudia Coenjaerts as head of the Caribbean Office of the ILO and advised the general assembly of the recent visit to the Bahamas by Mrs. Coenjaerts where she committed the ILO to providing The Bahamas with a technical Grant for the revision of the Bahamas Decent Work Country Program and the development of the Bahamian National Productivity Council. Minister Gibson's address also included updates on the status of the National Tripartite Council and the goals for the 2016-2017 period, the Government's initiatives in addressing youth unemployment with the Citizen Security and Justice Program, the National Empowerment Placement Program, and the Public-Private Partnership Program with Grand Bahama Shipyard.

Caribbean Ministers of Labour Meet with ILO Director General -- On Tuesday June 7th four Caribbean Ministers of Labour attending the 105th Session of the International Labour Conference met with Guy Ryder, Director General of the International Labour Organization.

During the meeting Labour Ministers from The Bahamas, Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad discussed a wide variety of issues that impact workers in the region and how the ILO can respond to the needs of Caribbean Nationals including, the relationship between the ILO and CARICOM, the need for the Director General to support the Social Partners at a Regional, National and Enterprise level, and the inclusion of Caribbean States in the Director General's Vision for the ILO over the next five years.
