The
ALS Ice Bucket
Challenge is taking the internet by storm raising vital funds for
research into in many areas of the world, predominantly United States
and Canada, but The Bahamas is now taking part, and although we've seen
videos popping up on the internet, we'd like to share this one from the
Bahamas Consulate
General Miami who were challenged by the
Consulate General of Canada Miami. "We would like to challenge the US
Department of State - Office of Foreign Missions in Miami; Bahamas
Consulate Atlanta; The Bahamas Tourism Office Plantation; and the
Bahamas Consulate General and UN Permanent Mission in New York!" they said on their Facebook page.
According to Forbes Magazine, "between June 1 and August 17, over 28 million people have joined the
conversation about the Ice Bucket Challenge including posting,
commenting or liking a challenge post and 2.4 million videos related to
the ice bucket challenge have been shared on the social network."
As described by the association,
the challenge "involves people getting doused with buckets of ice water
on video, posting that video to social media, then nominating others to
do the same, all in an effort to raise ALS awareness. Those who refuse
to take the challenge are asked to make a donation to the ALS charity of
their choice." (The commonly suggested donation is $100.) Of course you can do both: douse yourself and donate!
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) can also be referred as motor neurone disease (MND), Charcot disease, OR more commonly, Lou Gehrig's disease—is a neurodegenerative which is often characterised by rapidly progressive weakness due to muscle atrophy, difficulty in speaking, swallowing, and breathing. It is a fatal disease (commonly patients are told they have 2 - 5 years to live) and there is no known cure yet, or reason for its cause.
