NEW YORK, NY - The Bahamian American Cultural Society, Inc. presented its second Bahamian Genealogical and Heritage Conference and Workshop in New York City on Saturday, July 16, 2011. It was held in the American Negro Theatre at the legendary Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, in Harlem.

The conference was well attended by a diverse cross section of Bahamian Americans and Americans. The leadership of the Society, who developed the conference and workshop, said in a statement that the event “Will guide and respond to the interests of a wide range of individuals and groups. It will explore direct family linkages and give insights to potential generational and commonage land claimers. At the same time it will provide practical approaches for those who wish to begin immersing themselves in their family history and heritage.”

Presenting and supplying the informational, historical, and policy structure were: Gloria Ramsey Lucas, on author and genealogist from Augusta, Georgia; Grace Turner, an archaeologist and lecturer at the College William and Mary, from Nassau; and Tex Turnquest, a consultant in land policy and management information also from Nassau.

A member of the Cultural Society sees the construct, collaboration, and co-sponsorships of the Genealogical and Heritage conference by a State Senator and two Bahamian American Assemblymen as a positive sign of the emergence of a strong coalition of Bahamians in the Diaspora, which can benefit both Bahamian Americans and The Bahamas. The majority of those attending the conference scored it as very informative and successful.

The conference also motivated them to visit more frequently to The Bahamas to reconnect with their relatives or to vacation.
