I extend my congratulations to the people of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas as you celebrate 42 years of independence.  As The Bahamas completed its successful CARICOM chairmanship on June 30, its leadership advanced policies that invest in our region’s collective citizen security, energy diversification, and youth development.

The United States values The Bahamas as a trusted partner and friend.  Our broad, deep relationship allows us to celebrate the strong historic and cultural ties between our nations and to demonstrate the benefits of democracy for others.

The abundant natural beauty and charm of The Bahamas are why American greats such as Ernest Hemingway and Martin Luther King, Jr., sought its refuge and why now more than six million Americans flock to its clear waters, coral gardens, and white sands each year.

From Bimini through the Berries down to the Raggeds, with the rhythms of Rake n’ Scrape and Junkanoo music, the United States stands as a committed partner in working together to build a safer and more prosperous Bahamas.  We look forward to continued collaboration, reflective of our shared values, in the areas of citizen security, energy security, education, and the holistic development of young people.

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I wish The Bahamas a joyful Independence Day.  March on, Bahamaland.
