Nassau, Bahamas - Ms. Marion Bethel was recently elected to serve as an international representative on the United Nations CEDAW Committee. CEDAW is the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women. She successfully beat out a UN candidate from Spain to sit on this auspicious committee, which will be working for women's rights worldwide.
The Bahamas faces an uphill climb after the rejection of the proposals put forth by referendum, part of which sought to bring more equality for women. However, Ms. Bethel has been paying courtesy calls and hosting talks to help to educate Bahamians on the importance of the tenets of CEDAW for Bahamian women.
For the next year, she will have to travel to the UN to participate in working committee sessions aimed at benefitting women all around the world.
