The High Commission in Ottawa wishes to provide the following update on the process to vote for the Constitutional Referendum 2016 and for the General Elections 2017:

CONSTITUTIONAL REFERENDUM 2016

The Writ of Referendum was issued on 11th May 2016 in respect of the Constitutional Referendum. Bahamians who are on the 2012 Register of Voters are eligible to vote during the Constitutional Referendum to be held on 7th June 2016.

Please note that if you wish to vote in Canada, you must apply to be classified as an Overseas Voter using a Form J.  The deadline for submitting the Form J is 18th May 2016 or seven days after the Writ of Referendum has been issued. Bahamians who have applied and are classified as Overseas Voters in Canada will cast their ballots in the Constitutional referendum by an Advanced Poll on Monday 31st May 2016 at the Bahamas High Commission in Ottawa, Canada.

Persons who have recently obtained the age of 18 can register to vote for the Constitutional Referendum but must do so before 18th May 2016.

Bahamians who are registered on the 2012 Register and do not qualify to be classified as an Overseas Voter  can vote in the Constitutional Referendum in The Bahamas on 7th June 2016.

GENERAL ELECTIONS 2017

Voter registration for eligible Bahamian citizens opened in October 2015, and is an ongoing process. Bahamians who are temporarily residing outside of The Bahamas as described in the Parliamentary Elections Act (namely full-time students and their spouses; employees of the Bahamas High Commission and the Bahamas Tourism Office and their spouse and dependent children) can register at the Bahamas High Commission in Ottawa by appointment or during voter registration drives in other Canadian cities.
