OPA-LOCKA, Fla. (WSVN) -- A college choir visiting South Florida is getting a helping hand after they became victims of a crime.
"So unexpected," said Audrey Wright, the Founding Director of College of the Bahamas Concert Choir.
"We're
not a mega ministry," said Pastor Eric Readon, New Beginning Missionary
Baptist Church, "but we do what we can and help who we can."
The
group of 31 students and four professors are with the College of the
Bahamas Concert Choir and have been on a tour -- with their own money --
bringing a little Bahamian flavor to South Florida. But early this
week, their trip took an ugly turn.
The choir stopped, at
around 10 at night, at the Dave & Buster's at Oakwood Plaza. Hours
later, at around 1 in the morning, they went to leave and found their
was van broken into. "It was disappointing. We didn't expect for it to
happen at all," said choir member Stermon Rolle.
More than $6,000 in valuables -- including their costumes, laptops and iPhones -- were stolen.
On
Friday, however, they got some help from New Beginning Missionary
Baptist Church: $500 donated through the "Enough, Is Enough, Stop The
Violence" campaign. It's a new initiative created to keep local kids
safe, which was started in honor of young King Carter, who was shot and
killed when he was caught in the cross fire of a shootout between gang
members in Miami.
Dylan Robinson, a third grader said, "Makes me feel excited to give back."
As a thank you, the choir gave back with the gift of music.
"It just goes to show we do believe in helping each other," Wright said.
The group will perform at the following locations this Saturday:
