Commonwealth Foundation re-launch puts civil society participation at the heart of accountable governance

On November 1st, 2012 the Commonwealth Foundation re-launched as directed by Commonwealth Heads of Government. The 54 Heads of State gave the instruction to relaunch as part of moves to reform Commonwealth institutions when they last met in Perth Australia in October 2011.

One year on, the Commonwealth Foundation presents a new direction, look and strategy which it believes will have an impact on the international development community.

After twelve months of intense consultation the organisation has responded to the mandate to mobilise civil society in pursuit of Commonwealth principles and priorities by focussing on citizens’ participation. The Foundation’s new mission is to develop the capacity of Civil Society to act together and learn from each other to engage with the institutions that shape people’s lives.

Commonwealth Foundation Director, Vijay Krishnarayan said:
The Foundation’s approach to improving governance focusses on equipping civil society with the knowledge it needs to engage with governments and others. The Foundation will also help governments and institutions so that they can improve the way that they respond to the growing demand to participate from civil society. This determination to improve participatory governance stems from a desire to see better development outcomes achieved and to embed a culture of sustainable democracy."
