NEW YORK, New York – Last week, the United Nations concluded its High-level Political Forum (HLPF) on sustainable development which was held from 11-20 July, 2016. The event, which is the official review and monitoring process for the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) launched earlier this year, tracks countries’ progress on 169 targets addressing a wide range of issues such as poverty, education, economic growth, and climate change by 2030. Dominique Maingot, from Freeport, Grand Bahama was a part of the youth division of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) - a UN initiative launched by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to mobilize global scientific and technological expertise on SDG implementation. Dominique is a graduate of Boston University, and a law graduate of the University of Sydney. She specializes in sustainability issues relating to climate change and biodiversity conservation, and is currently a member of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law. “Over the next 15 years, the SDGs are expected to serve as a transformative, hybrid approach to many of the world’s development problems," says Dominique. "Several of the HLPF events I attended, emphasized the value and participation of young people in creating these solutions. This year’s HLPF theme, ‘Ensuring that no one is left behind’, especially echoes the long-term focus of the SDGs and how they will affect our future."
“Learning from the shared experiences and resources of countries was one of the points frequently highlighted at HLPF 2016. Understanding countries’ unique starting points, and adapting solutions to countries’ development contexts is also an important step to be taken.” On the final day of the HLPF, SDSN and German-based foundation, Bertelsmann Stiftung, launched their Sustainable Development Goal Index and Dashboard: a report card for tracking SDG progress on 149 of the 193 UN member countries. Following its additional generation and submission of data on the SDGs, it is hoped that The Bahamas, too, will be included in future editions of the Index.
