USA - At the 66th Boule of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated held in Charlotte, North Carolina in mid-July, Bahamian flags flew high among a crowd of over ten thousand persons as the Hon. Melanie Griffin, Minister of Social Services and Community Development received the International Service Award. This international award served as recognition for Minister Griffin’s dedication and commitment to child development and family welfare. Notably, out of the 16 awarded recipients recognized at the sorority's public meeting, Minister Griffin was the only non-American awarded.

In her acceptance speech, Minister Griffin highlighted her gratitude to Alpha Kappa Alpha for the award and congratulated the Eta Psi Omega Chapter of Nassau, Bahamas for their work in advancing the plight of women and girls in the local Bahamian community.

In recognition of this prestigious award, the Eta Psi Omega Chapter along with members of the Tau Nu Undergraduate Chapter, Nassau, Bahamas, Pi Upsilon Omega Graduate Chapter, Freeport, Bahamas and other Bahamian sorority members, honored Minister Griffin with a celebratory breakfast. Eta Psi Omega Chapter President Alana Ingraham expressed her delight by sharing, "It is such an honour for our sisterhood to highlight the global impact and accomplishments of not just a woman but rather a Bahamian woman. The acceptance of this award speaks volumes of the continued development and significance of Bahamian women everywhere."

Minister Griffin has made affected the social landscape of the Bahamas, particularly through the enactment of three major pieces of legislation: The Residential Care Facilities Act 2004, The Child Protection Act 2007 and the Domestic Violence (Protection Orders) Act 2007. Minister Griffin’s life motto is "Making a difference for Christ" and her work is a testament to this proclamation.
