Vienna, Austria

Some 850 delegates from more than 60 Contracting Parties will take part in the Sixth Review Meeting of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management at the IAEA’s Vienna headquarters from 21 May to 1 June.

Bismark Tyobeka, President of the Sixth Review Meeting and Chief Executive Officer of the National Nuclear Regulator of South Africa, will open the proceedings and IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano will address the opening plenary session.

In force since 2001, the Joint Convention seeks to achieve and maintain a high level of worldwide safety in spent fuel and radioactive waste management. To further that objective, Contracting Parties deliver national reports on their implementation of the convention's obligations that are discussed as part of a peer-review process held every three years.

Topics on the agenda of two-week meeting include recent developments and challenges in the safe management of disused sealed radioactive sources, as well as general safety issues, challenges and public acceptance aspects of storage and disposal of higher-level radioactive waste.
