The Hon. Jerome Fitzgerald, Minister of Education, Science & Technology, met with Kamalesh Sharma, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth at Marlborough House in London on Thursday 23 January 2013. The Meeting was to discuss the planning for the 19th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (19
CCEM) which will be held in The Bahamas in June 2015 under the theme ‘Quality Education for Equitable Development: Performance, Paths and Productivity.’

Commonwealth Ministerial Meetings are one of the principal forums for Commonwealth inter-governmental consultation and decision-making. Commonwealth Education Ministers meet every three years to discuss issues of mutual concern and interest, to formulate policy on key developmental issues and to build a consensus at a high political level within the Commonwealth. The 19CCEM will work towards advancing the Commonwealth goals of development, democracy and human rights as set out in the Commonwealth Secretariat Strategic Plan and Charter.

The 19CCEM will be organized by the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology of The Bahamas and the Commonwealth Secretariat. Other partners who will be included in the planning process include the Commonwealth Foundation, the Commonwealth of Learning, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

The 18CCEM was held in August 2012 in Port Louis, Mauritius, and the last time that the Conference was held in the Caribbean was in 1974 in Jamaica.
