On September 11, 2009, ten finalists from seven countries across the Caribbean will compete for a grant of US $100,000 to invest in the growth of their company, and the prestigious title of Pioneer of Prosperity. Experts in the fields of business and finance are arriving in Jamaica from around the world to judge the final stage of the competition.

From an astounding 580 applications, ten Pioneers of Prosperity emerged representing some of the most innovative, dynamic businesses in the region.  Each one of the finalists has already won a grant from the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) of US $40,000 and will be connected to a global network of technical expertise, potential investors, and other cutting-edge entrepreneurs.

The Pioneers of Prosperity Awards Program is a global program made-up of regional competitions spanning the Caribbean, Africa and Central America. Seven countries participated in the inaugural Caribbean competition: Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago.  The program will launch in Central America on September 14, 2009.

All events for the Caribbean awards will be held at the Half Moon Bay Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica.  A ceremony will be held the evening of September 11th to mark the occasion, hosted by the Hon. Orette Bruce Golding, M.P. Prime Minister of Jamaica.

The Pioneers of Prosperity Program seeks to inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs in emerging economies by identifying, rewarding, and promoting outstanding small to medium size businesses who will serve as role models to their peers.  The Program is sponsored by the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank, the John Templeton Foundation, and the Social Equity Venture Fund (S.E.VEN Fund) and was conceived and initiated by Michael Fairbanks, a recognized thought leader in the area of enterprise solutions to poverty.  Michael Fairbanks is a co-founder of S.E.VEN Fund. The program has also built a network of over 35 local partners throughout the Caribbean. Jamaica Trade and Invest is co-hosting the Final Awards Ceremony.

A brief description of each finalist follows:

From Jamaica two country winners were identified: Sandra Samuels of Totally Male Limited, a company she founded in 1994 which offers Jamaican professional men with a full aesthetic upgrading experience, and Silburn Clarke of Spatial Innovision, a company he founded in 1998 to provide custom implementation of land mapping technology, were identified as country-level winners and will proceed to the regional ceremony.

Event Details

The countdown to the Pioneers of Prosperity Caribbean Awards 2009 has begun. The Honorable Orette Bruce Golding, Prime Minister of Jamaica will preside over the event.  The ceremony will be held at the Half Moon Bay resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica on September 11, 2009. The grand prizewinner will be selected from over 580 applicants across seven Caribbean countries, for awards totaling $100,000 USD.  Additional awards will be given.

Ten country-level winners, and four honorable mentions, from Belize, Barbados, Bahamas, Guyana, Jamaica, Haiti, and Trinidad & Tobago are competing for the grand prize.

What is Pioneers of Prosperity?

Part of the global Pioneers of Prosperity (PoP) Award Programme, the event brings together top Caribbean businesses, investors, leadership, and members of the community to celebrate and recognize torch-bearing entrepreneurs and their firms in the region.  The competition highlights the power of entrepreneurship to drive prosperity in the Caribbean in the midst of the current global economic crisis.

PoP’s long-term aim is identify , highlight, and promote powerful role model entrepreneurs that will inspire the next generation of Caribbean business leaders. Pioneers of Prosperity is founded on the fact that innovative ideas and dynamic business models exist in even the most challenging markets, and that greater prosperity will ensue if these local models of success are better understood, better supported, and showcased widely.  A Pioneers of Prosperity (PoP) Award winner by definition is an entrepreneur whose business provides sustained value to its customers, workers, owners, and future generations, and whose commercial success and entrepreneurial spirit make them a role model to their peers

Winning companies are selected using the COW-F framework, which was developed by Michael Fairbanks.  COW-F entrepreneurs create value for four key stakeholder groups: 1) they innovate to satisfy customers; 2) they, as owners, provide a competitive ROI; 3) they provide high and rising wages to and training for workers; and 4) they have a sustainable business model with initiatives that strengthen society and do not degrade the environment.   Framed another way, winners know what product or service to offer to which customer to give them a competitive advantage.  They nurture, train and compensate workers with a sustainable, community involved, and environmentally sound business model for the future.

All ten winners at the country-level received a grant from the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) of US $40,000 to invest in training and technical infrastructure for their company and are eligible during the regional competition for a chance to win an additional US $60,000 and the prestigious title of Pioneers of Prosperity Caribbean.  All five honorable mentions will receive a similar grant of US $10,000.  Winning firms will also be connected to a global network of technical expertise, potential investors, and other cutting-edge entrepreneurs.

The competition is sponsored by the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) of the InterAmerican Development Bank and The John Templeton Foundation . Michael Fairbanks of the SEVEN Fund developed the concept for Pioneers of Prosperity, and the program is executed globally by the OTF Group
