Washington DC - University of The Bahamas part-time professor Christopher Saunders presented ground-breaking research on Snapchat usage and Bahamians at The 7th Social Media Technology Conference and Workshop at Howard University in Washington DC October 5, 2017. The study entitled “Happy Snapping: Does happiness, narcissism, religiosity, and life position predict Snapchat Intensity among Bahamian users” produced interesting results about the social media platform and Bahamian users. The study focused on happiness but found that narcissism was the highest predictor of the platform’s intensity among users. “Those in the study seemed to display more narcissistic traits as their intensity to use the platform increased,” said Saunders, who is also a broadcaster/producer at ZNS-TV. “The platform is the perfect outlet for those with narcissistic traits as they are able to have complete control over the image or video they put out there. There is little depth in the interaction on the platform and is almost exclusively one-way communication. So those who are producing content are able to have the shallow interactions that seek to only bolster their ego.” Saunders also found happiness to be a significant predictor of Snapchat intensity but not as strong as narcissism. “But that could just be a by-product of their narcissism. They may just be more happy because their ego is being stroked and maintained more on Snapchat.”
The conference is organized by a consortium of top journalism and communications scholars and professional and offers a diverse perspective for journalism and communications educators to connect with newsroom leaders and communications professionals to share knowledge and explore how new technologies are shaping society. "It's rare that we see this high tech research on how social media effects the Caribbean,” said fellow presenter and Crypto Harlem founder Matt Mitchell. “My folks come from Trinidad and Grenada, I was proud to watch the presentation on the research on Snapchat use in The Bahamas, at Howard University." The 2017 Social Media Technology Conference and Workshop was held at The Interdisciplinary Research Building on the campus of Howard University and was partially sponsored by the National Communication Association.
