STEMSO Conference Explores Current International Regulations On Adult Stem Cell Therapy

ANDERSON, South Carolina – The International Stem Cell Society (STEMSO) announces that Llast week the U.S.A. District of Columbia Circuit Court issued a ruling that will shape the development of stem cell therapy in the United States for years to come by affirming the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA)’s position that autologous and allogeneic stem cells are regulated as “drugs,”, The ruling will lead to more off-shore investment and patients seeking medical treatments abroad not available to them in the United States.

The global STEMSO 2014 Conference titled “Bridging the Gap: Research to Point of Care,” February 19-22, 2014 at the Grand Lucayan, brings together regulatory experts, attorneys, scientists, clinicians, researchers, and investors together at an opportune time to discuss stem cell therapies and medical business start-ups operating under the recent Bahamas Stem Cell Research and Therapy Act.

This U.S. court case confirms that most newly developed clinical translations of stem cell protocols are prohibited by the F.D.A. This decision further limits the use of cell therapies in the practice of medicine to treat diseases or injuries with the exception of clinical trials. These trials often include a very limited number of patients. Therefore, patients seeking to utilize their own stem cells (autologous) or stem cells from an adult donor (allogeneic) may have no other option than to travel abroad to international jurisdictions such as the Bahamas to receive stem cell therapies to treat many disease conditions.

The Bahamas economy will benefit from the newly passed Stem Cell Research and Therapy Act in 2013 allowing adult stem cell therapies. Many international countries such as Japan, China, Korea, and Australia are now providing stem cell therapies to treat a variety of chronic diseases and injuries in a safe and legal manner. It appears that the Bahamas are taking a similar proactive approach combining regulation with the practice of regenerative medicine to make these therapies available to patients in need.

“STEMSO will continue to provide a proactive and positive voice for organizations and jurisdictions using adult stem cells for therapies and transplants. The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, and our Gold Sponsor Okyanos Heart Institute provide an excellent example of the results that can be brought about with realistic, modern and balanced regulations that serve the national economic interest, patient needs for life-saving medicine, and the business advantages for commercialization and translation of adult stem cells,” states Douglas Hammond, President of STEMSO.

The complete agenda for the conference may be found on STEMSO’s website at http://www.stemso.org. Registration is open for attending the STEMSO Conference.
