U.S. Ambassador Nicole Avant Participates in the First Annual PEPFAR Caribbean Regional Meeting in Barbados

Nassau, The Bahamas - On January 12 and 13, the United States Ambassador to The Bahamas, Nicole A. Avant participated in the First Annual PEPFAR Caribbean Regional Meeting hosted by the U.S. Embassy to Barbados.
This meeting brought together U.S. Government officials and Caribbean partners to recognize the first year of PEPFAR activities in the regional Caribbean program, and to continue the planning process for successful implementation of the Partnership Framework.
Participants included Global AIDS Coordinator Ambassador Eric Goosby, Health Ministers from CARICOM and the Dominican Republic, nine U.S. Ambassadors and Chiefs of Mission, other high-level representatives from twelve Partnership Framework countries and three bi-lateral country programs, CARICOM and OECS representatives, and other key stakeholders.
In her remarks, U.S. Ambassador Avant said that she hoped PEPFAR resources will have a cumulative and enduring impact on the national public health system by increasing access to critical health care services for all Bahamians. Ambassador Avant also told the group of experts that the U.S. Embassy to The Bahamas looks forward to working with PEPFAR partners in the region to identify and amplify successful models to curb the spread of HIV.
This year, through PEPFAR, the U.S. government committed more than $1.6 million in assistance to The Bahamas in the areas of prevention, strategic information and laboratory strengthening as well as human capacity development and strengthening. Through the Ambassador’s Fund for HIV/AIDS Prevention, the U.S. Embassy to The Bahamas has also provided over $50,000 in grants to local HIV/AIDS organizations, including the Bahamas AIDS Foundation, the National HIV/AIDS Center, Youth Ambassadors for Positive Living (YAPL), and The Bahamas National Network for Positive Living (BNN)
