My title is the tag line from the re-booted popular 60’s television series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. movie, which brings us back to the era of the cool secret agent style that has influenced men’s fashion over several decades. For those of you who miss it, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. television series is about two agents, American CIA Napoleon Solo and Russian KGB agent Lillya Kuryakin working together at a global intelligence agency to save the world from an evil organization called THRUSH. This fashion era of the cool secret agent style all started with Sean Connery as James Bond in Dr. No released in 1962. For the movie, James Bond had to appeal to a worldwide audience, so his tailoring was sophisticated and elegant. Not so typically British cut at that time.
With The Man from U.N.C.L.E. movie, the Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) character has an appreciation for the finer things in life such as art, wine and beautiful women. So costume designer Joanna Johnson dressed him in bespoke slim tailored windowpane three-pieces suits in soft hues. Lillya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) sports a zip-front khaki Baracuta jacket, similarly worn by Steve McQueen. His character is ruff and unpolished reflecting the old Soviet Union Empire. Underneath his jacket, Hammer wears a black turtleneck sweater as did Kuryakin (David McCallum) in the original television series. This is one fashion carry over I predict will become a man of action look this fall.
Throughout the years, Hollywood and television studios have crafted the secret agent life of dressing well and visiting exotic locals. The look is sharp and elegant with subtle color combinations that tells a woman you may be more that who say you are. Just don’t forget to add a stylist pair of sunglasses. The 1960’s were one of the most significant fashion periods in modern American history. It didn’t matter if you were blue or white-collar worker; men wore suits and women wore dresses. It was a period where everyone really cared about being fashionable. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. movie release with its 60’s cool secret agent style reminds us how much influence cinema has on fashion and our lives.
