Luxury sportswear is the top fashion story for spring and summer and what better way to step up your style game while still emphasizing your toned bodies and athletic lifestyle? After all, who wants to be wrapped up in long sleeve tees and sweatpants once the warmer weather arrives? Trade those joggers for a pair of hot pants to show off your sleek legs or pull on a crochet dress that covers just enough to leave a bit of flirtatious mystery.

In past seasons, luxury fashion’s take on sportswear leaned heavily towards ‘sports luxe’, offering designer sneakers and sweatpants. This spring, however, European luxury fashion designers have begun moving away from the casual athletic look and toward a more polished style.

As summer days approach, consider refreshing your wardrobe with colours, cuts and styles that transform your current look into a more fashionable elegant one. Ahead are my top luxury fashion looks from the spring/summer European designer collections.

Hot Pants

In London last summer, the Mary Quant mini skirt took over the streets and now her hot pants are set to take over the world.

Isabel Marant gave us short yet elegant hot pants as did Hermes and Ferragamo. Look for leather, satin and denim styles that emphasize your legs for that straight-off-the-runway look. While some designers showed their hot pants with bare legs, Chanel paired theirs with dark hosiery, providing an option for women who may not want to go full ‘Daisy Duke’ just yet.

Crochet Dresses

Fendi, Salvatore Ferragamo, Jil Sander and more have updated your grandma’s favourite pastime this spring, making sexy dresses for day and evening in crochet. Short or long, these form-fitting dresses come in many styles. Some have added details such as fringe for a touch of seventies throwback fun. But these sultry dresses are a step above the typical boho look common at summer music festivals and would look more at home after dark at the club or a gallery opening.

Skirt Suit

The masculine pant suit has been replaced by the pretty French skirt suit and all I can say about that is vive la France. Appearing a few seasons ago at Chloe, skirt suits were everywhere at Paris’ spring/summer shows. Take a tailored jacket and add a flowing skirt to create that effortless Parisian chic. Simple and elegant - that’s why I love Paris.

Luxury White

When it comes to luxury, an all-white outfit has always separated the common folk from the Hampton set.

Look to Proenza Schouler for all-white daywear and to Alexander McQueen for elegant lace sets. The head-to-toe white look is clean and crisp that not only makes a luxury statement but also allows you to stand out from those sporting typical summer casual street attire.

Collar Necklaces

Looking for a statement piece this summer? Large collar necklaces, made from crystal, metal, turquoise and even large pearls, are sure to draw attention. Getting larger each season, these necklaces are designed to highlight your collar and frame your face. Watch for gold and silver tones this season.

Super-size Bags

Think big! Forget those tiny handbags from past seasons that would only hold your mobile phone. I often see young women on the train carrying two handbags and European fashion designers are responding to this purse overload with bags big enough to hold an iPad, water bottle AND that extra pair of heels.
