Late potcake star AMIGO is still hard at work, through “AMIGO’S FUND,” helping his animal friends as he looks down from “doggie Heaven.” His latest mission, along with Humane Society International, has been to help sponsor the recently held Spay/Neuter Field Clinic in the Eight Mile Rock area of Grand Bahama Island.

Spay/Neuter is a subject with which AMIGO was strongly associated in his lifetime as the official ‘poster dog’ of the HSGB Spay/Neuter Campaign. He was featured on its eye catching, timeless posters as well as full page adverts in tourist magazines raising awareness to this desperately important means of controlling pet overpopulation.

AMIGO’S FUND is a Bahamian Charitable Trust (amigosfund.org) which was set up after Amigo’s passing to honor his legacy and mission and has helped HSGB to sponsor prior spay/ neuter initiatives and ‘puppylifts. ‘

Amigo, through his association with The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) of which HSI is the international wing as the star of The BeKind Campaign, and most notably, along with HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle and hip hop impresario Russell Simmons, was featured in Public Service Announcements dealing with the issues of dog fighting and cruel animal trapping. Both PSA’s can be seen in the “watch” section of bekind.org.

Amigo was the inspiration as well, behind the hugely successful “Potcake Series” of Bahamian Commemorative Stamps featuring paintings by famed Bahamian artist Alton Lowe provoking a literal ‘stampede’ of buyers as First Day Covers were sold out even before they had a chance to be properly publicized.

AMIGO’S FUND founder as well as HSGB Honorary Chair, Frances Singer–Hayward who rescued Amigo from the bush as a starving and diseased stray potcake, commented that “I cannot possibly imagine a more appropriate endeavor for AMIGO to be associated with then a Spay/Neuter initiative, partnering with his old and dear friends both at HSUS/HSI and The Humane Society of Grand Bahama. We can only pray that everyone will become more supportive of initiatives such as this and that pet owners themselves will be responsible enough to have their own animals sterilized if they are free to wander and mate, adding to the tragic homeless animal problem resulting in unthinkable animal suffering, so prevalent on GBI. We thank all those who were involved and fervently hope that “this is only the beginning…”
