RBDF apprehends Haitian sloop west of Ragged Island, Bahamas

Coral Harbour Base, 10 Aug. 15: The Royal Bahamas Defence Force patrol vessel, HerMajesty's Bahamian Ship Leon Smith commanded by Acting Lieutenant Commander Stephen Rolle, apprehended a Haitian sloop west of Ragged Island Saturday evening with one hundred forty-three (143) Haitian migrants onboard.

The migrants consisting of 117 males, 23 females and 3 kids (2 females; 1 male) were transported to Coral Harbour Base Monday morning, where they were handed over to Immigration authority for further investigation.

Last week Wednesday Defence Force Marines apprehended eight Cubans in a makeshift vessel in the Gulf Stream west of West End, Grand Bahama. Altogether, the Defence Force has apprehended or assisted in apprehending almost 1,000 migrants for illegal entry into The Bahamas this year.
