Nassau, Bahamas - In a world where the view of technical education is shifting, The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) and LJM Maritime Academy (LJMMA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for further training and skill development of their students and faculty.

LJMMA is a Bahamian maritime training institution which offers internationally recognized certifications in the maritime field and preparation for long-term job placement on international vessels and shore-based enterprises. BTVI is the premier technical and vocational institution in The Bahamas.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which was signed by President of BTVI, Dr. Robert W. Robertson, and President of LJMMA, Dr. Brendamae Cleare, took effect on July 13, 2016.

The move aims at cooperation in areas such as academics, funding and research. It also promotes exchange among faculty and students.

This MoU which will remain operational for an initial period of five years, with renewal possibilities every three years thereafter, will see cooperation in other areas such as sharing of facilities.

BTVI’s Dean of Construction Trades and Workforce Development, Alexander Darville, indicated that this partnership “gives our students an opportunity for employment. They can tap into the maritime industry.” He went on to say that, “it broadens BTVI’s offerings… because of this MoU we can now offer maritime related courses.”

LJMMA’s President, Dr. Brendamae Cleare expressed that, “it’s about the youth of The Bahamas and educating them… with the marrying of these institutions, we are able to give them greater job opportunities aboard vessels.”

This collaboration coincides with BTVI’s mission which is, “To provide learning opportunities that enable individuals to be globally competitive and economically independent.”
