Nassau, New Providence – ALCON, a global leader in eye-care and a division of Novartis, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, recently appointed the leading local supplier of medical and surgical products in The Bahamas as their local partner to provide improved eye-care products and services in the country.

Bahamas Medical &Surgical Supplies Ltd. is the official distributor of Alcon’s Vision Care portfolio of products which includes prescription and non-prescription contact lenses and a wide range of contact lens solutions. This partnership will result in increased accessibility of Alcon Vision Care products.

The Alcon sponsored launch took place on March 30th, and local ophthalmologists, optometrists, pharmacists, eye-care professionals, nurses and retail managers participated in the event at the Balmoral Club. Along with the media, guests were invited to learn about the new relationship and the impact the partnership will have on their ability to serve their customers. While this specific partnership is part of a new initiative, Basil Barnett, Director of Bahamas Medical explained that “Bahamas Medical has represented the Alcon Surgical Division for more than five years. The decision by Alcon to expand its partnership with Bahamas Medical to include the Vision Care Division was to provide an efficient and cost-effective solution for the market. As innovators in the vision care industry for the past seventy years, Alcon’s primary focus over the next several months will be to fill the gaps in service which have existed for vision care providers in the islands. Optical offices that would have had to source contact lens from optical stores in the United States now have an affordable and reliable in country service.

“There’s been a gap in terms of service we have been able to provide,” said Ernesto Artinano, Alcon Cluster Business Head. “That’s why we are changing things with our new partnership with Bahamas Medical, this way we can provide our products directly through our local partner, faster, cheaper and better for all concerned.”

During the evening, guests were also shown the latest improvements in eye wear and lens care, including lenses from Air Optix Color line featuring Hydraglyde technology. “We are also unveiling our solution for cosmetic contact lens wearers, the Air Optix Colors – which is the only contact lens of its kind in the world –from our Air Optix family which provides superior breathability and comfort”, explained Mr. Artinano.

Bahamas Medical & Surgical Supplies Limited is located on Shirley Street. It is the major supplier of medical and surgical products and equipment to the healthcare sector. The company operates a homecare retail store that caters to individuals with chronic or long-term illness.
