Nassau, Bahamas – 4th September, 2016 – In light of the recent confirmed Zika cases issued by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) wishes to encourage all parents to apply mosquito repellent to students prior to them leaving home to attend school. An outbreak on a school campus is the last thing we want, so we are encouraging parents to take the necessary precautionary measures both in and out of school.

As mentioned by the Ministry of Health, the symptoms of Zika virus disease are rash, red eyes, joint pain and fever. Additionally, many infected people have no symptoms. Parents, if your child(ren) have any of these symptom, please do not send them to school but seek medical attention immediately.

As children head back to school, let us work together to ensure that the students’ health and safety remain a priority. The MoEST is seeking to minimize interruptions in school days for our students in order to maximize instruction time as we “educate our students to create life-long learners”.

The Bahamas’ Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) has responsibility for more than 50,000 K-12 students in approximately 170 educational institutions in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, which are dispersed over 14 districts in the major islands. Our goal is to increase the graduation rate from 50% to 80% by 2030. The MoEST aims to create an educational system that is technologically sound and competitive and that develops the strengths of each child, whether academic or otherwise, towards the maximum contribution that he/she is able to make to the national development of The Bahamas.
