Nassau, Bahamas -- The
Bahamas Pharmacy Association is joining the International Diabetes Federation
(IDF) in celebrating World Diabetes Day, which takes place each year on
November 14th
to
raise awareness of this devastating disease.
Diabetes is a leading threat to global health and
development. According to IDF, over 300 million people live with diabetes
around the world. Within a generation, that number is expected to reach half a
billion.
This
year’s theme is:
Diabetes Education and Prevention
.
-
Diabetes
kills 1 person every 8 seconds, 4 million people a year
-
Diabetes
does not discriminate. It affects all ages, rich and poor, in all countries of
the world.
-
Diabetes
can no longer be ignored because 4 million lives are lost per year; 1 million
amputations per year; with millions lost in income and productivity.
-
Life-saving
care is a right not a privilege; and patients deserve education, medicines and
technologies.
-
Choose
Health! Consumers should demand healthy food and environments, keep active, and
eat well. You can make a difference!
The
Bahamas Pharmacy Association is encouraging all Bahamians to eat healthier,
become active, and learn the signs and symptoms of Diabetes. For more
information on healthy lifestyle modifications that can prevent/control
Diabetes, the public is urged to speak to their healthcare providers, inclusive
of physicians, nurses and pharmacists. Together, we can defeat Diabetes!
