In this vein, members or any affiliate of the BPC are expected in the course of performing their duties to, especially in light of the upcoming political season: SEEK TRUTH AND REPORT IT. The media should be honest, fair and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information. MINIMIZE HARM. Ethical members of the media are to treat sources, subjects and colleagues as human beings deserving of respect. ACT INDEPENDENTLY. The media should be free of obligation to any interest other than the public’s right to know. BE ACCOUNTABLE. Members of the media are accountable to their readers, listeners, viewers and each other. Further, members or any affiliate of the BPC should refrain from: Engaging in the practice of self-censorship to suppress essential information. Making headlines, news teasers and promotional material, photos, video, audio, graphics, sound bites and quotations do not misrepresent. They should not oversimplify or highlight incidents out of context. Avoid pandering to lurid curiosity. Show good taste. Dressing and conducting themselves on any assignment in a manner that can bring the profession into disrepute. Members and affiliates are further encouraged to: Demonstrate a keen interest in training and research to competently serve the profession and the Bahamian people. The Bahamas Press Club 2014 was reinstituted on September 7, 2014 to promote and uphold the highest ideals and standards of journalism and mass communications, while providing for the exchange of ideas and experiences and the offering of professional development opportunities. One of the aims of The Club, to borrow from the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. is to promote social enjoyment among members, cultivate literary taste, and encourage friendly intercourse among news practitioners and everyone with whom they have contact in the pursuit of the profession. “To further aid in the practice of our profession, we will lead the charge in pursuing the government to pass and implement a Freedom of Information Act, to ensure that the media and the general population of The Bahamas have free access to information,” said President Anthony A Newbold.
