SANDY BOTTOM PROJECT: At Coral Harbour multiple civil and marine works will be performed during the coming months. Unfortunately this will hinder vessels passing through the Coral Harbour waterways, particularly in the area of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Base.

The key subcontractor to the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) is Van Oord Bahamas Ltd. Van Oord will try to ensure that Coral Harbour is accessible to all other vessels as much as reasonably practical. However, as the works include excavation of the access channel and construction of a breakwater, it is unavoidable that there will be no access to Coral Harbour for some days. During these activities, no vessels can leave or enter the Coral Harbour Basin. Van Oord will endeavour to announce the various closure dates via the RBDF as early as possible.

Please be aware that during the execution of the various works, Van Oord will be operating very large vessels in the Coral Harbour Basin. Marine traffic in the vicinity is to exercise caution as these vessels are limited in speed and manoeuvrability and as such, react slowly. Therefore, please contact the vessels before entering the working area and indicate your planned movement. You can contact the vessels directly (dredger ‘Dinopotes’ and workboat ‘Maggie M’) on VHF channel 12 or 74. The captain will tell you at what side it is safe to pass. Please follow the instructions carefully to prevent accidents or incidents.

During the operations inside the harbour basin silt screens will be used for environmental reasons. The silt screens will block the main entrance (between the breakwaters) and will block the entrance leading to and from the two canals. A gateway will be included in the silt screens which can be opened by RBDF personnel. Please contact the RBDF on VHF channel 12 or channel 74 in order to pass. DO NOT TRY TO CROSS THE SILT SCREENS. Silt screens are very fragile and any damages caused will be billed to the party causing the damages.

Please be patient, as operating of the silt screens is time consuming. Please be careful while passing any vessel or screen; act responsably for your own safety and the safety of others.

RBDF Coral Harbour contact for information or for operation of the silt screens:

Coral Harbour 24 hour Operations

Telephone 2: +1 242 3620338
Early requests would be appreciated which may allow for multiple vessels to transit in tandem.

Figure 5: Activities hindering the entrance between the breakwaters. No access! In case the Harbour will be fully closed and no entrance is possible, RBDF and Van Oord inform other users two days in advance. During construction activities of the breakwater and the excavation of the entrance between the breakwaters the entrance may be blocked for a few days. Thursday: Day shift operations in the access channel between and near breakwaters. We aimed to open the silt curtain in the evening, this is however not possible due to a tidal restriction. Friday: 0900-1000: silt curtain between breakwaters open to allow traffic to pass. From 1000 onwards: Silt curtain closed, operations between and near breakwaters. Silt screen open between 1500 and 1600. 1600: work continues. The bulk dredging of the harbour basin will start 1200 Friday 14 November 2014. The current work had to be brought forward due to imminent arrival of the rock barge which requires a deeper and wider harbour entrance. Short-term schedule will be published and broadcast later on Thursday, 13 November 2014. We apologize for the inconveniences caused.
