Defence Force apprehends Second Group of Foreign Fishermen within a Week

Coral Harbour Base,(RBDF): For the second time within a week, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) apprehended another group of Dominican fishermen earlier this morning for illegally operating in Bahamian waters.

The two Dominican small go-fast type boats were apprehended at 11:00 am just off North East Point, Inagua by RBDF patrol craft P- 128, coxswained by Petty Officer Edison Rolle, while on routine patrol. Onboard were 7 Dominican fishermen along with several air compressors and containers of gasoline.

The Dominicans were taken into custody and handed over to Police and Immigration officials at Great Inagua, and will be transported to New Providence where they will be charged for various fishing offences. Both skiffs and the fishing apparatus were all confiscated and handed over to the Police for further processing.

Just last Tuesday, another 7 Dominican fishermen were apprehended by patrol craft P-128 off Inagua. They have since been charged before the courts on several counts resulting in sentences up to 9 months and $413,000 in fines.
