Harbour Base, (RBDF) – Royal Bahamas Defence Force Marines attached to the Harbour Patrol Unit (HPU) rescued 5 individuals, including an 8-year-old child after a 20-ft speed boat ran aground on a Cay late Sunday Night.

After receiving information shortly after 11:00pm of a vessel that hit a reef on Long Cay located just north of Arawak Cay, Patrol craft P-40 coxswained by Leading Seaman Mario Ramsey went to investigate. After arriving on the scene and discovering the area was inaccessible by boat, Leading Seaman Ramsey along with Marine Seaman Collison Ingraham swam through deep water towards the distressed individuals. All of the individuals (2 males, 2 females and 1 child) were transported aboard the Defence Force vessel.

Defence Force Marines on the craft attempted CPR on one of the survivors, who was later pronounced dead by Emergency Medical Service (EMS) personnel. A sixth individual who was a part of the crew was reported missing, but has since been found.

Earlier on Sunday, the Harbour Patrol Unit detained 2 males who were wanted by Police for criminal matters. After receiving a call approximately 9:00 pm of a disabled 20-ft fibre glass vessel north of Paradise Island with 4 men onboard. Patrol craft P-40 went to investigate and brought the men and their vessel to the Harbour Patrol facility. Further investigations revealed that 2 of the men had outstanding criminal warrants, and were handed over to Police officials.

In another incident, Marines attached to the HPU received a call shortly before 11:00 pm Sunday of an unresponsive male tourist onboard a sightseeing tour boat near Athol Island. After arriving on scene, Leading Seaman Antonio Fowler attempted to revive the individual with the use of a defibrillator machine.
