Nassau, The Bahamas –  Tomorrow, enrolment for NHI Bahamas will launch, bringing Bahamians one step closer to receiving Primary Care services at no cost at point of care. During the enrolment phase, Bahamians select their preferred doctor who they will receive Primary Care services from once that phase of coverage begins.

"The launch of enrolment for NHI Bahamas is an exciting development for our country. We’ve had a positive response from the physician community and many have now signed up as Primary Care providers under NHI. I encourage persons to enrol early so they can have first pick of their preferred doctor who they will soon receive Primary Care services from." - Peter Deveaux-Isaacs, Permanent Secretary, National Health Insurance Secretariat

In order to enrol, persons will need the following:

  1.     NIB Smart Card
  2.     Be a Bahamian citizen or legal resident
  3.     Proof of residency in The Bahamas for the last 6 months (e.g. utility bill in your name, lease agreement, job letter, etc.)
All eligible Bahamians can enrol with NHI Bahamas, regardless of whether persons already have private insurance or not. For those who do currently have a private insurance plan, they will also need to provide their policy group ID and Member ID number when filling out the enrolment form.

For ease and convenience, Bahamians can enrol in NHI Bahamas and select their doctor online at www.nhibahamas.gov.bs, or in-person at the following enrolment locations in New Providence:

  •     Cotton Tree Plaza at Bernard Road, Fox Hill - 9:00am-7:00pm (Monday-Saturday)
  •     Enoch Beckford Memorial Auditorium on Carmichael Road - 9:00am 7:00pm (Monday-Saturday)
  •     New Providence Community Centre on Blake Road - 9:00am-7:00pm (Monday-Friday)

Persons in the Family Islands can enrol online or in-person at their local NIB office.

“Given the excitement around NHI Bahamas, we anticipate a significant number of persons will enrol early,” said Dr. Delon Brennen, NHI Project Manager. “We want to make sure the enrolment process is as easy as possible for Bahamians who are looking forward to receiving Primary Care services at no cost at point of care. That’s why we are encouraging Bahamians to skip the line and enrol online.”

The enrolment form will ask persons to fill out their personal information and select their doctor from a list of registered Primary Care providers. Applications will be processed diligently and persons can expect to receive either confirmation of their enrolment and Primary Care provider selection within 10 business days, or be contacted to provide additional documentation. Confirmation notices will also provide the date when each person can start to access Primary Care services under NHI Bahamas. The sooner persons enrol, the sooner they can be confirmed and start receiving services.

Persons are encouraged to visit www.nhibahamas.gov.bs to ensure they are familiar with the enrolment process.
