On Monday, 24th April, 2017 representatives of the Department of Social Services of the Ministry of Social Services and Community Development visited Cat Island to distribute visa pre-paid cards to qualified persons on the government food assistance programme.

Ms. Phedra Rahming, Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Social Services and Community Development, addressed the group of Cat Islanders who were eager to receive the card. She noted that a per-paid card would give clients a degree of dignity when purchasing food items at local food stores, as some clients had endured negative comments and stigma when the paper coupons were presented to the cashiers.

The card would also prove beneficial to the food merchants who would now have access to a modern, automated payment system which would allow them to receive payments in a timely and more efficient manner.
