Eleuthera, Bahamas – Through its work of connecting organizations to resources to assist in strengthening them and the communities they work in, The One Eleuthera Foundation (OEF) observed the need for capacity development for the NGOs, CBOs, CSOs and Government agencies on Eleuthera. Recognizing the connection of its objectives to those of the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme Strategy, OEF successfully submitted application to host a three-day workshop on Eleuthera geared toward improving the grant writing and project management skills of organizations on the island.
“While organizations have been working miracles with their limited resources, it is imperative that such training be provided to allow them to increase their funding resources, which is a major factor in them continuing and expanding their work, and evolving to compete in a global economy”, said OEF’s Director of IT/Communications Gacintha Gordon.
Held May 19th to 21st, the workshop was led by GEF SGP Bahamas National Coordinator, Deon Stewart and HD Wells President Stacey Wells-Moultrie who was the main trainer for the event. Pertinent information and evocative exercises on topics such as proper budgeting, monitoring and evaluating grants and projects, and managing and tracking project budget and activities captivated the attention of participants throughout the training. The skills learned have equipped attendees with the knowledge and tools necessary to apply for almost any grant or manage almost any project.
Trainer Stacey Moultrie was intrigued by the enthusiasm of those attending the workshop. “The attendees participated actively and came up with some excellent project ideas”, said Moultrie.
“I hope to see them pursue grants for the ideas they came up with in the workshop, including building solar water heaters for a local community as well as preservation of the palm used in straw crafts on the island,” she continued.
The GEF Small Grants Programme was established in 1992, the year of the Rio Earth Summit. The GEF SGP embodies the very essence of sustainable development by "thinking globally acting locally". By providing financial and technical support to projects that conserve and restore the environment while enhancing people's well-being and livelihoods, GEF SGP demonstrates that community action can maintain the fine balance between human needs and environmental imperatives. The GEF SGP looks forward to continuing working closely with the development of CSOs on the island of Eleuthera and throughout The Bahamas.
One Eleuthera continues to fulfil its mandate of being a viable source that brings together organizations, people and resources to find, develop or expand projects and activities in the areas of culture and heritage, educational enhancement, environmental protection, economic development and health and wellness that enable Eleutherans to prosper.
OEF expresses sincere gratitude to GEF SGP Bahamas for the contribution they have made to Eleuthera as well as to the Cancer Society of Eleuthera for providing the facilities for the workshop to take place.
